Towards the end of his life, Xavier Herbert, who died in Alice Springs in 1984, was widely considered one of the great Australian novelists. Author of two epic novels set in the Territory, Capricornia and Poor Fellow My Country, Herbert was writing a third, which was to be set in Central Australia and called Billygoat Hill, after the well-known Alice Springs landmark.
