Home ownership dreaming

Karl Hampton

3/2/10: Town camp residents at Ilpeye Ilpeye will have the chance to “chase the great Australian dream of home ownership,” says the NT Government’s Minister for Central, Karl Hampton in a report by Marie Bout for the ABC in Alice Springs.

Residents have opted to relinquish their jointly-held lease to the Federal Government. It now will be subdivided and managed by Territory housing and residents will have the option of buying their homes and land.

Three years ago, former Aboriginal Affairs Minister Mal Brough created controversy when he said town camps needed to be “normalised’ and become part of mainstream Alice Springs.

Alice’s town camps exist mostly on the outskirts of human settlement, usually separated by a road or a creek from the majority suburban population. Last year the Federal Government took temporary control of the other 17 leases, and began to build new houses and repair damage to existing houses. Independent member for MacDonnell and former NT government Minister Alison Anderson told ABC News the other housing associations should be offered the same deal as Ilpeye Ilpeye.

Who is Karl Hampton the minister in hiding. by that I mean hiding behind spin and conjecture. We need housing we need affordable housing. we need to have land and house packages for young people under $250,000.00. so they can get the first homebuyers finacial assistance. we need territory housing offering rent buy incentives to assist people into home ownership. we need real people in government doing real things for the territory. Karl if the water is too hot go have a cold shower and then resign from your position and let someone like alison anderson fight for us.
