Bird politics

Drawing by Neville Cayley, Australian Botanic Gardens website.

I occasionally feel sorry for Alice’s feral doves, when not cursing them. They are so widely hated for just being free.

Would I find their endless cooing so irritating if they were native birds? And at what point do we give up and accept that they are here to stay?

Not yet, this black-faced cuckoo shrike seemed to be saying when I captured this confrontation in our front yard. These beautiful creatures are so graceful and dignified usually, but this particular character seemed inordinately pleased with him or herself.

Birds are smarter than we think. Maybe the locals are fighting back! - D.R.

  1. In YouTube video embed code you can also stipulate parameters matching to your hope like width, height or even border colors.

  2. Feral doves…Neat. Here in the United States we call them pigeons. I don’t believe there’s any difference from a scientific classification standpoint. Great video too, I don’t blame you for not being a fan!
